Former Nigerian Ambassador to Norway, Sweden and Denmark, Ambassador Godknows Igali, has criticised the Federal Government over the poor condition of roads in the Niger Delta, saying the reality on the ground contradicts claims by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, that major road projects are progressing.
Speaking during a television interview, Igali said frequent trips across the region have exposed him to the deplorable state of key highways, particularly the East-West Road and the Benin-Asaba Expressway.
He said he finds it difficult to believe the minister's optimistic assessments, declaring that he sometimes feels like "breaking my television" whenever he hears official claims about road improvements.
According to him, the East-West Road has deteriorated significantly, with journeys that once took less than an hour now lasting several hours because of the poor condition of the highway.
Igali cited the stretch between Sapele and Benin, saying what used to be a 40 to 45-minute journey now takes about three hours, causing hardship for commuters and businesses.
He also referenced recent protests by motorists and residents over the deplorable condition of the Benin-Asaba Expressway, describing the demonstrations as evidence of growing public frustration.
The former envoy argued that the neglect of roads in the Niger Delta is unjust, considering the region's enormous contribution to Nigeria's economy and oil revenue.
He stressed that the people of the region are not asking for special treatment but for fairness, equity and adequate infrastructure.
Igali added that Nigerians have become more politically aware and are increasingly demanding accountability from elected officials.
His remarks come amid renewed public outcry over the condition of the Benin-Asaba Expressway, which recently witnessed protests over severe traffic gridlock.
Following the protests, Works Minister David Umahi inspected the highway and blamed the concessionaire for removing more than 30 kilometres of asphalt without adequate replacement.
The Federal Government has since begun moves to terminate the concession agreement, while President Bola Tinubu has directed the full reconstruction of the affected section of the expressway.
