A woman has been arrested by the Osun State Police Command following the sudden death of a vigilante member identified as Sunday, popularly known as Apetu, shortly after a sexual encounter in Ile-Ife.

The incident reportedly occurred around 2:30pm on Sunday in the Odi-Olokun area of Ile-Ife, throwing residents into confusion after a video of the man's final moments circulated on social media.

In the video, Apetu was seen in severe distress on Ooni Ilare Street, gasping and screaming while reportedly pleading with the woman to give him urine.

A situation report attributed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said the man displayed signs of serious physical distress shortly after the encounter before eventually collapsing and dying.

The woman involved in the incident was subsequently taken into custody at the Moore Police Division as authorities commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Apetu's remains were deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, for further medical examination.

The actual cause of death has not been established, while claims by some residents that the man died as a result of what they described as a "thunderbolt" remain unverified.

The traditional belief suggests that a person affected by a supposed "thunderbolt" could harm another person through sexual contact. However, there is no established medical or scientific evidence confirming the belief as an explanation for the man's death.

A senior officer of the Osun State Police Command confirmed that the command was aware of reports circulating on social media but cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified accounts of the incident.

The police are expected to rely on investigation and medical findings to determine what led to the man's sudden death and whether any criminal offence was committed.

The incident has generated concern among residents of Ile-Ife amid conflicting accounts of what transpired between the deceased and the woman.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators and relevant medical authorities to establish the circumstances and actual cause of the death.
