Media Literacy Key to Combating Financial Fraud – Expert, Egejuru

A media and communications expert, Egejuru, has stressed the importance of media literacy in the fight against financial fraud, saying that the ability to identify false and misleading information is one of the strongest tools for protecting individuals from scammers.

Speaking at a public engagement, Egejuru noted that the increasing sophistication of online fraudsters has made it imperative for people to verify information before acting on financial offers, investment opportunities, or requests for personal details.

According to the expert, many victims of financial fraud are deceived through fake news, manipulated social media content, phishing messages, and fraudulent online advertisements. He emphasized that improving media literacy would help citizens critically evaluate information, recognize red flags, and avoid falling prey to scams.

Egejuru also called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, financial institutions, educational bodies, and the media to promote digital awareness and equip Nigerians with the knowledge needed to navigate the online space safely.

He urged members of the public to rely on credible sources of information, verify suspicious claims, and report fraudulent activities to the appropriate authorities, noting that an informed and vigilant society remains the best defence against financial fraud.
