The Nigerian Army has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye, Commanding Officer of the 20 Model Battalion, dismissing reports that he was killed in a bandit attack.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, the Army said Lt. Col. Okoye died on June 13, 2026, after a brief illness.

The clarification followed widespread claims on social media alleging that the senior officer lost his life during a bandit attack. The Army, however, described such reports as false, stressing that his death was not connected to any operational incident.

โ€œLt. Col. Okoye passed away on June 13, 2026, after a brief illness, contrary to claims that his death resulted from a bandit attack or any operational incident,โ€ the statement said.

The late officer\'s death was first announced on June 14 by the Headquarters of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army.

Paying tribute to the deceased, the Commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, alongside officers and soldiers of the formation, extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and personnel of the 20 Model Battalion.

The Army described Lt. Col. Okoye as a dedicated and courageous officer whose military career was marked by professionalism, exemplary leadership, and commitment to national service.

According to the Brigade, he made significant contributions to the operational effectiveness of the battalion and the achievement of the Brigade\'s security objectives.

The statement noted that his devotion to duty, commitment to the defence of Nigeria\'s sovereignty, and service to his troops would continue to inspire officers and soldiers across the Nigerian Army.

While mourning the loss, the Army reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, maintaining peace and security, and defending the territorial integrity of the country.

The Brigade prayed for the repose of the officer\'s soul and for strength for his family and loved ones during the period of mourning.
