Two Nigerians Face UK Murder Trial Over Nightclub Assault

Two Nigerian nationals have been arraigned in the United Kingdom over the alleged murder of Taiwo Ekerin, who died after a violent assault outside a nightclub in London earlier this year.

The suspects, Maxwell Oguanaya, 32, and Chibueze Chukwurah, 34, were charged following the death of Ekerin, who sustained a fatal head injury during an attack outside the Alpha Lounge nightclub on Lewisham High Street in May 2026.

The Metropolitan Police launched a murder investigation, codenamed Operation Doughwall, which led to the arrest of the two suspects in Glasgow a day after the incident.

According to a statement issued by the founder of the Nigerians in the UK Community, Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as Oluomo of Derby, both men have been remanded in custody and are awaiting trial.

Kuti said the killing of Ekerin had deeply saddened the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom, noting that the case has attracted significant attention.

He stressed that although the suspects have been charged, they remain innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

"If convicted of murder, they could face a life sentence. However, it is important to remember that being charged with an offence does not mean someone is guilty. They remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law," Kuti stated.

Under UK law, a conviction for murder carries a mandatory life sentence, although the minimum term to be served is determined by the court based on the circumstances of the case.

The trial is expected to proceed before the appropriate UK court as investigations and legal processes continue.
