The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of three senior police officers and the demotion of 16 others over misconduct and conduct unbecoming of members of the Nigeria Police Force.

The commission also approved various disciplinary sanctions against 42 officers and exonerated three others from allegations brought against them.

PSC Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Mr Torty Kalu, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to him, the disciplinary decisions were reached at the commission’s plenary meeting presided over by its Chairman, Mr Hashimu Argungu.

Kalu said 16 officers were reduced in rank, while 21 others received severe reprimands and two were issued ordinary reprimands.

He added that three officers were cleared of wrongdoing, while some officers who had previously been suspended were reinstated into the force.

The PSC chairman said the decisions reaffirmed the commission’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, human rights abuses, interference in land and civil matters, and other forms of misconduct within the police.

Argungu assured Nigerians that the commission would continue to ensure the speedy resolution of disciplinary cases brought before it.

He also commended the PSC Standing Committee on Discipline and Legal Matters for its diligence and commitment in handling the departmental, committee and plenary stages of the disciplinary cases and appeals.

The commission said the sanctions were part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen discipline, accountability and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
