Fresh details have emerged about Cole Tomas Allen, the 31-year-old man accused of opening fire during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner attended by President Donald Trump and other top US officials on Saturday night.

Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, has been identified by law enforcement as the suspect who allegedly stormed security at the Washington Hilton armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives before being subdued by security agents.

Authorities said he is facing two counts of using a firearm and one count of assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.

US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, said the suspect appeared determined to cause significant harm.

β€œThis individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could,” Pirro said shortly after the incident.

Investigators said there is no known motive yet, but they currently believe Allen acted alone.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated after gunfire caused panic inside the ballroom where journalists, political leaders and celebrities had gathered for the annual dinner.

Public records show Allen worked as a part-time teacher at C2 Education, a tutoring and test preparation company, where he was recognised as β€œTeacher of the Month” in December 2024.

His LinkedIn profile also described him as a video game developer and former student of the California Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 2017. He later obtained a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.

While at Caltech, he reportedly belonged to the school’s Christian fellowship and Nerf club. He also gained local attention in 2017 for developing a prototype emergency brake for wheelchairs.

Allen is also linked to an independent video game titled Bohrdom, listed for sale on the Steam platform, and had reportedly been developing a second game.

Federal Election Commission records further show he donated $25 to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in October 2024.

Meanwhile, FBI agents and local police searched a home linked to Allen in Torrance overnight, with the area sealed off as investigations continued.
