The lawmaker representing Asari-Toru Constituency I in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Granville Tekenari Wellington, has backed the arrest warrant issued by the Assembly against the Vice-Chancellor of PAMO University and other university officials.
Wellington, who spoke during Friday’s plenary, also called on the Rivers State Government to redirect funds allocated to PAMO University towards supporting indigent students in state-owned tertiary institutions.
He said he was not opposed to government investment in education but argued that greater priority should be given to Rivers indigenes and financially disadvantaged students attending institutions owned by the state.
The lawmaker said the university had failed to satisfactorily account for more than ₦24 billion before the House, making legislative action necessary to ensure transparency and accountability.
He maintained that no individual or institution was above the oversight powers of the legislature.
Wellington therefore urged his colleagues to support the Assembly’s efforts to compel the university authorities to provide the necessary explanations and account for the funds in question.
