The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee (CPC) to coordinate activities marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary in the state.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, inaugurated the committee in Port Harcourt, saying it was constituted to effectively plan, coordinate and execute all approved programmes for the national celebration.

Wokoma stressed the importance of early preparations, assuring that the state government would spare no effort in ensuring a successful and memorable commemoration of Nigeria's independence.

He announced that activities for the anniversary would begin with a Juma'at prayer service on Friday, September 25, 2026, followed by an inter-denominational thanksgiving service on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

According to the SSG, the celebration will climax with the grand finale on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Nigeria's Independence Day.

Wokoma commended security agencies as well as relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) for their sustained cooperation in ensuring peaceful and hitch-free celebrations over the years.

He also urged members of the planning committee to deploy their experience, professionalism and commitment to deliver a successful Independence Anniversary celebration for the state.
