The Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee (LPPC) has conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on 68 lawyers and one academic, recognising their outstanding contributions to legal practice and scholarship.
The decision was taken at the committee's 174th plenary session held on Thursday in Abuja and chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Akan.
According to the committee, the successful legal practitioners were elevated based on their seniority at the Bar after meeting the prescribed requirements for the country's highest professional distinction for advocates.
Among those elevated are Ibrahim Gamdeh Adamu, Jude Chukwuemeka Okafor, Godwill Achibong Umoh, Sunday Samuel Obende, Adebayo Olugbenga Adaralegbe, Jimson Ejovi Okodaso, Olalekan Lawrence Bade-John, Olaotan Thomas Olusegun, Philemeon Audu Daffi, Adenrele David Adegborioye and several others drawn from different parts of the country.
In the academic category, Prof. Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri emerged as the sole recipient of the SAN rank in recognition of his contributions to legal education and scholarship.
The conferment of the SAN title is one of the highest honours in Nigeria's legal profession and is reserved for practitioners and academics who have demonstrated exceptional competence, integrity and distinguished service to the development of the law.
The newly elevated Senior Advocates are expected to be formally sworn in at a date to be announced by the Supreme Court.
