The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately desist from unauthorised social media activities capable of damaging the image, professionalism and integrity of the Force.
The directive, issued on Tuesday, follows growing concerns over the increasing number of police officers creating and sharing videos, conducting live broadcasts and engaging in other social media activities while in uniform or in situations that clearly identify them as members of the Force without official approval.
According to the IGP, although social media remains an important platform for communication and public engagement, its use by serving officers must strictly comply with existing laws, regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
He stressed that officers are prohibited from posting unauthorised content while in uniform, making public comments on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information or using their status as police personnel for personal publicity, entertainment or commercial purposes.
To ensure compliance, Commissioners of Police, heads of departments, commanders and other supervisory officers have been directed to sensitise personnel under their command and enforce strict adherence to the directive. The IGP warned that supervisors would be held accountable for any failure to address violations within their jurisdictions.
The police chief also tasked the Force Intelligence Department and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) with intensifying the monitoring of social media platforms to identify officers whose online activities fall short of the professional standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force reiterated its commitment to discipline, professionalism and responsible public communication, assuring Nigerians of its continued dedication to maintaining public confidence and upholding institutional integrity. The statement was signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, on behalf of the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
