Nigerians evacuated from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic tensions arrived safely in Lagos on Thursday as the Federal Government intensified efforts to protect its citizens affected by the unrest.
The returnees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 10:15 a.m. aboard an Air Peace aircraft deployed for the evacuation exercise.
The operation forms part of a coordinated response by the Federal Government following reports of attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in parts of South Africa. The development has heightened concerns over the safety and welfare of Nigerians living in the country.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, was expected to receive the evacuees on arrival and oversee arrangements for their welfare and reintegration.
The evacuation followed growing reports of violence, looting and attacks on foreign-owned businesses and communities, which have sparked fears among Nigerians residing in South Africa.
Authorities said the government remains committed to safeguarding the lives and interests of Nigerians abroad while continuing diplomatic engagements aimed at addressing the situation and preventing further attacks.
