The camp of the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed reports suggesting that he plans to leave the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over alleged disputes arising from the party’s candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The reaction came on Monday following widespread media reports claiming that Kwankwaso, who is the NDC vice-presidential candidate, was unhappy with the replacement of some candidates allegedly nominated by the Kwankwasiyya bloc.
The reports had suggested that the movement was considering withdrawing its support from the party over what was described as a breach of an earlier power-sharing arrangement among stakeholders.
However, the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Sale Mohammed, dismissed the claims, describing them as unfounded rumours with no basis in reality.
Speaking with journalists, Mohammed insisted that neither the movement nor its leader had expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s internal processes or threatened to leave the NDC.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement, and neither its leader, is complaining. These reports are mere rumours and should be disregarded,” he said.
He explained that the party's primaries were conducted on May 29 in accordance with the Electoral Act and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission, with successful candidates duly affirmed on the same day.
According to him, party leaders and stakeholders had previously agreed on the adoption of consensus candidates where necessary, and the process was completed without any significant disagreements.
Mohammed maintained that the list of candidates submitted by the party reflected decisions reached collectively by stakeholders and was not the subject of any dispute involving the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
He further stated that Kwankwaso had not communicated any grievance or dissatisfaction with the party to members of the movement.
The spokesperson added that any questions relating to the reported candidate substitutions should be directed to the leadership of the NDC, which he said was better positioned to address such matters.
The clarification comes amid growing political speculation over internal alignments within opposition parties as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the public denial by the Kwankwaso camp may help calm concerns about possible divisions within the party and reinforce confidence among supporters ahead of future electoral activities.
