The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has threatened an indefinite nationwide strike over worsening insecurity in the country and unresolved wage-related concerns affecting federal workers.
In a communique issued after an online meeting and signed by its National Coordinator and Secretary, Andrew Emelieze and Ayo Ogundele respectively, the forum accused the Federal Government of failing to protect workers and address growing economic hardship.
The group also criticised the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), accusing both bodies of not showing sufficient leadership in pushing for solutions to workers’ concerns.
According to the forum, an online opinion poll conducted among members showed overwhelming support for immediate industrial action if the issues remain unresolved.
FWF alleged that the July 2024 minimum wage adjustment did not translate into meaningful relief for federal workers, claiming only a flat N40,000 increase was implemented across grade levels and that deductions further reduced the benefit.
The forum further alleged that the proposed 40 per cent peculiar allowance expected to take effect from May 1, 2026, was not reflected in salaries despite earlier indications from relevant authorities.
It also raised concerns over unpaid entitlements, including wage award arrears, outstanding Duty Tour Allowance payments, promotion arrears, and other unresolved salary adjustments.
Rejecting the Nigerian Governors’ Forum’s proposed N100,000 minimum wage benchmark, the workers described it as inadequate and demanded what they termed a living wage, payment of all outstanding arrears, and a cost-of-living allowance.
On insecurity, the forum said federal workers and their families continue to live in fear amid recurring cases of kidnapping and attacks across parts of the country.
It specifically condemned recent abductions involving teachers and children in Oyo and Borno States and called for urgent government action to secure the release of all hostages.
The group urged the NLC and TUC to engage government for a speedy resolution of both economic and security concerns and called on authorities to explore all lawful means to rescue abducted persons.
FWF also advocated broader national dialogue through a sovereign national conference to address issues affecting governance and national stability.
