The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on President Bola Tinubu-led government and security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard Nigerian children from insecurity and ensure schools remain safe places for learning.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, to commemorate Children’s Day on May 27, 2026, CAN expressed concern over the growing threat to children’s safety, particularly following recent school attacks and abductions in parts of the country, including Oyo State.

The association said the attacks have deepened fear among families and raised fresh concerns about the future of education amid persistent insecurity. CAN noted that children still held in captivity and their families continue to endure emotional trauma.

“No child should have to experience fear and violence in a place meant for learning, protection, and hope,” the statement read.

CAN also expressed solidarity with teachers affected by such incidents, describing them as not only educators but caregivers and trusted figures in the lives of children.

Beyond security concerns, the association highlighted other challenges confronting Nigerian children, including poverty, hunger, abuse, trafficking, child labour, and poor access to quality education and healthcare.

The Christian body urged governments at all levels and security institutions to treat the protection of schools and children as an urgent national priority, stressing that every attack on educational institutions weakens public confidence and affects national development.

CAN further appealed for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to build safer environments where children can learn, grow, and pursue their dreams without fear.

The association encouraged children across the country not to lose hope, assuring them that their future remains valuable and deserving of protection and support.
