The Islamic State West Africa Province has confirmed the death of a senior member of its Shura Council, Abu Yahya Al-Muhajir, describing the development as one of its most significant setbacks in recent times.
In a statement and propaganda material circulated by the group, ISWAP lamented the loss, calling it its “greatest loss in recent times” within the Malam Fatori axis, a key operational area in the insurgency-hit Lake Chad Basin.
Security sources disclosed that Al-Muhajir was linked to recent terrorist operations in the region, although the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. He is believed to have either been killed during a failed attack on Malam Fatori or died from injuries sustained during subsequent military airstrikes.
According to the sources, troops successfully repelled the ISWAP assault on Malam Fatori, inflicting heavy casualties on the insurgents. An estimated 80 fighters were reportedly killed during the confrontation and follow-up operations.
Further intelligence indicated that internal communications within the group suggested that the slain commander may have suffered fatal injuries during the botched offensive or succumbed to wounds in the aftermath of sustained military pressure.
Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama reported that the March 18, 2026, attack resulted in the deaths of about 84 ISWAP fighters, with several others injured.
The latest development underscores ongoing military efforts to degrade insurgent capabilities in the Lake Chad Basin, even as security forces continue to intensify operations against terrorist elements in the region.
