The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has said the alleged coup plot currently under investigation by Nigerian security agencies was genuine, describing the suspects as “misguided individuals.”
Speaking on a television programme on Thursday, Musa said investigations by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) were still ongoing, adding that the agencies were taking their time to establish all the facts before making further disclosures.
According to him, the suspects have already been arraigned in court, making the matter sub judice.
"The DSS is still investigating together with the NIA, and they don't want to just say things they are not sure of, so I'm sure they're taking their time to ensure that they get the details," he said.
“They've taken them to court, so it's still with the court. It's not with us.”
The Defence Minister insisted that the alleged coup plot was real and not fabricated.
"It was real, and they actually wanted to do it for whatever reason," Musa stated.
He, however, described those behind the alleged plot as misguided, saying their motives would become clearer as the legal process unfolds.
"When you start hearing why they wanted to do it, just know that they're just a bunch of misguided individuals that went into it for just no reason," he added.
Musa did not provide further details on the investigation, citing the ongoing court proceedings.
