The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to due process, institutional discipline and the rule of law, following recent public statements by social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), concerning the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Lagos, AIG Moshood Jimoh.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police clarified that the criminal matter referenced by VDM had been investigated and is already before a court of competent jurisdiction based on the advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Force stressed that since the case is sub judice, its determination rests solely with the judiciary, adding that it would not conduct the trial in the media or allow public campaigns to influence the judicial process.
The police, however, disclosed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) had invited AIG Moshood Jimoh for questioning as part of an internal administrative review into the allegations raised.
It also revealed that the Force CID, Abuja, had on July 30, 2026, formally invited VeryDarkMan to appear before investigators to provide evidence supporting the claims he made publicly.
According to the statement, the invitations demonstrate the Force's resolve to investigate all credible allegations of misconduct through its established accountability channels, irrespective of the rank of the officer involved or the public profile of the complainant.
The police maintained that discipline within the Force is guided by the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders and other administrative procedures, which apply equally to all officers.
While affirming every Nigerian's constitutional right to freedom of expression and to demand accountability, the Force warned that such rights do not extend to defamation or the circulation of unverified allegations intended to pressure the police into disciplinary action outside due process.
It assured that any officer found culpable after investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law, while reserving the right to seek legal remedies where allegations are proven to be false and malicious.
The Nigeria Police Force urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation by the Force CID and cooperate with the ongoing administrative investigation, while allowing the court to determine the separate criminal case without interference from public commentary.
The Force reiterated that no officer is above the law and no genuine complaint will be ignored, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the impartial administration of justice.
