President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace peace, fairness and unity as the party commences its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Thursday, President Tinubu described the commencement of the primaries as a historic milestone for the ruling party, noting that the APC was preparing for its fourth election cycle since its formation.
The President said the party was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice and selflessness, urging members to preserve those ideals throughout the exercise.
According to him, the primaries, which begin with the House of Representatives contests and end with the presidential primary scheduled for May 25, are not just routine electoral activities but a test of the party’s unity, resilience and democratic strength.
Tinubu acknowledged ongoing efforts by party leaders across various levels to adopt consensus arrangements in some contests, describing the move as a commendable strategy capable of reducing tension and strengthening party cohesion.
He, however, stressed that where consensus fails, aspirants and delegates should approach the primaries peacefully and conduct themselves as sportsmen and women in the interest of the party and the country.
The President warned against divisive politics, rancour and actions capable of undermining the APC’s unity, emphasizing that elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair.
“There will always be winners and losers in every contest. Winners should not gloat, while those who lose should remain committed to the party and prepare for future opportunities,” he stated.
Tinubu urged victorious aspirants and party leaders to extend olive branches to those who may not emerge successful, insisting that politics should never become a zero-sum game.
He also appealed to governors, party executives and stakeholders to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants, saying even unsuccessful contestants deserve the satisfaction of a credible and transparent process.
The President further emphasized the importance of greater participation of women and youths in the party’s affairs, calling on delegates and leaders to give them special consideration during the primaries.
On security, Tinubu directed the Police and other security agencies to remain professional and focus strictly on maintaining peace and order during the exercise.
He wished all aspirants and party members a successful outing and expressed optimism that the APC would emerge stronger and more united ahead of the 2027 general elections.
