The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of three siblings in the Ogbunabali area of Port Harcourt.
The incident reportedly occurred on May 15 when a woman said to be learning how to drive allegedly lost control of a vehicle and rammed into a residential building where the children were staying. Eyewitnesses said the learner driver was receiving lessons from her boyfriend at the time of the crash.
The victims, aged 10, four and three years, were said to have died instantly after the vehicle ploughed into the residence belonging to Mrs. Amarachi Promise Esomonu. Residents described the incident as devastating and recalled moments of panic before the crash.
A viral video circulating online showed the grieving mother mourning her children and accusing those allegedly involved of remaining silent over the tragedy. She also lamented that the daily alarm she used to prepare the children for school continues to ring every morning despite their deaths.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, said the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, expressed sadness over the deaths and ordered a thorough investigation.
According to the police spokesperson, the command is committed to ensuring justice is served and that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The Rivers State Police Command also sympathized with the bereaved family and urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and cooperate with investigators as inquiries continue.
