The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, remains the most popular opposition figure capable of leading a united coalition to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The party's National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, made the assertion while reacting to ongoing efforts by the G100 group to facilitate the emergence of a single presidential candidate for opposition parties ahead of the polls.
According to him, the NDC has been approached by the G100 and is open to discussions on building a united opposition, but maintains that whoever emerges as the coalition's flag bearer must be the strongest and most widely accepted candidate.
Director said the party believes Peter Obi best fits that description, citing his popularity and broad appeal among opposition supporters.
He expressed confidence that the G100 would act in Nigeria's best interest as consultations continue on forging a common front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He, however, noted that the ultimate decision rests with Nigerian voters, who will determine the country's next president at the ballot box.
The comments come amid increasing efforts by opposition parties and political groups to close ranks and present a formidable challenge to President Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027.
The proposed coalition seeks to unite opposition presidential hopefuls behind a single candidate in a bid to strengthen their chances in the next general election.
While consultations are still ongoing, the NDC insists that popularity, acceptability and electoral strength should remain the key criteria for selecting any consensus presidential candidate.
