Team Nigeria delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, finishing seventh on the overall medals table and emerging as the highest-ranked African nation.
The Nigerian contingent returned with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze, securing a place among the top 10 countries at the Games. The final standings were confirmed by the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games organisers at the close of competition on Sunday.
Nigeria's medal haul was spearheaded by Esther Nworgu, who won the country's first gold medal in the women's lightweight para powerlifting event. Other gold medallists included Ezekiel Nathaniel in the men's 400m hurdles, Goodness Nwachukwu, who set a new world record in the women's F42 discus throw, Idris Riluwan in para powerlifting and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the men's shot put.
Sprint star Tobi Amusan also added to Nigeria's success, overcoming injury to claim a bronze medal in the women's 100m hurdles.
Australia topped the medals table with 171 medals, followed by England and Canada in second and third places respectively. India, Scotland and New Zealand completed the top six, with Nigeria finishing just behind New Zealand and ahead of Jamaica, Wales and Malaysia.
Nigeria's seventh-place finish underscored another successful outing at the Commonwealth Games, as its 10 gold medals ensured it remained Africa's best-performing nation. South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana and other African countries finished further down the standings, highlighting Nigeria's dominance on the continent at this year's Games.
