Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly killed nine soldiers during an attack on a military formation in Mandara-Girau, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack, according to security sources, occurred in the early hours of Friday when heavily armed terrorists stormed the military position amid a downpour, catching troops off guard.

Mandara-Girau is situated a few kilometres from Biu town, one of the major communities in southern Borno.

A security source disclosed that the insurgents arrived in large numbers and engaged the troops in a fierce assault, resulting in significant casualties.

β€œThe terrorists overwhelmed the soldiers. Nine troops were killed and several others sustained injuries during the attack,” the source said.

The source further revealed that part of the military formation was overrun by the attackers before reinforcements could respond.

A video clip lasting one minute and 38 seconds, obtained by our correspondent, showed the bodies of eight soldiers lying on the ground and covered with blankets, apparently after the incident.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military had not issued an official statement confirming the attack or the casualty figures.
