The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has presented cheques worth ₦2.317 billion to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of police officers who died in active service.
The presentation, held on Thursday in Abuja, covered beneficiaries under the Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
According to the Nigeria Police Force, the beneficiaries are families of officers covered under the 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 insurance policy years. The payments also included outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial settlements.
Speaking during the event, IGP Disu described the disbursement as more than a financial exercise, saying it reflected the Force's responsibility to families of officers who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
He acknowledged that no amount of money could replace the lives lost but said the benefits were intended to provide practical support and reassure the families that the sacrifices of their loved ones would not be forgotten.
The police chief noted that officers continue to serve under difficult and dangerous conditions across the country, making significant sacrifices to safeguard lives and property.
He assured the beneficiaries that the Force would continue to recognise their sacrifices and explore legitimate avenues to improve the welfare of police families.
Reaffirming that personnel welfare remains a key priority of his administration, Disu said the Force would continue to implement initiatives aimed at improving healthcare, accommodation, working conditions and other welfare packages for serving officers and their dependants.
He also directed the Force Insurance Unit to intensify awareness campaigns across commands and formations to ensure officers and their families fully understand their insurance benefits and the procedures for accessing them.
Force Insurance Officer, ACP Lydia Ameh, commended the Inspector-General for prioritising the settlement of outstanding insurance claims and improving access to benefits for police personnel and their families.
She said the recovery of pending entitlements and improvements in claims administration demonstrated the Force's commitment to ensuring that eligible beneficiaries received their rightful benefits.
Disu also praised the Force's insurance partners for their cooperation and urged them to ensure the prompt settlement of genuine claims, noting that timely insurance payments provide vital support to families who have lost their breadwinners.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, dignity and wellbeing of its personnel and their families, while honouring officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
