Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Nuclear-Free World

Nigeria has reiterated that it has no nuclear weapons or programme for developing weapons of mass destruction, reaffirming its commitment to global nuclear disarmament.

Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, made the declaration while addressing the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking as the international community marked the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), Ibrahim said President Bola Tinubu's administration remains committed to a world free of nuclear weapons.

He noted that all nuclear-related activities in Nigeria are regulated by the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, stressing that the country's nuclear programme is strictly for peaceful purposes.

The envoy added that Nigeria is working with other nations and international partners to promote global nuclear non-proliferation and strengthen efforts toward eliminating nuclear weapons.

Ibrahim also urged the international community to review the United Nations Charter to provide stronger measures against countries that conduct nuclear weapons tests, saying such actions undermine global peace and security.

He further emphasised that Africa remains a nuclear-weapon-free zone under the Pelindaba Treaty and called on all nations to uphold international commitments aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.
