Team Nigeria enjoyed another successful outing on Day Eight of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding one gold and one silver medal to its impressive tally as the country continued its strong showing at the competition.
The highlight of the day came from Ezekiel Nathaniel, who stormed to victory in the men's 400m hurdles to claim Nigeria's latest gold medal and earn the title of Commonwealth champion.
Nathaniel produced a commanding display, crossing the finish line in 48.47 seconds to finish ahead of England's Jake Minshull, who settled for silver in 48.99 seconds, while Jamaica's Assinie Wilson claimed the bronze medal with a time of 49.22 seconds.
The Nigerian hurdler took control of the race from the early stages and maintained his rhythm before powering through the closing hurdles to seal a convincing victory.
The triumph marked a remarkable improvement for Nathaniel, who finished sixth in the same event at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Four years later, he returned stronger and better prepared to stand atop the podium.
Reacting to his victory, Nathaniel described the achievement as a proud moment for both himself and Nigeria, saying the gold medal meant a great deal to him and his country.
Nigeria's medal success continued in the men's 200 metres, where Udodi Onwuzurike delivered an impressive performance to win the silver medal.
Competing from lane eight, Onwuzurike clocked a season's best of 20.09 seconds to finish second behind South Africa's Sinesipho Dambile, who claimed gold in 19.96 seconds.
The silver medal became Nigeria's sixth at the Games, with Onwuzurike expressing satisfaction with both his performance and the outcome after giving his best on the track.
In the men's decathlon, Jami Schlueter completed a commendable Commonwealth Games debut by finishing seventh overall with 7,665 points after remaining among the leading contenders throughout much of the competition.
With the latest podium finishes, Team Nigeria's overall medal haul rose to nine gold, six silver and three bronze medals, bringing the country's total to 18 medals as it heads into the closing stages of the Glasgow Games with renewed confidence and hopes of adding more silverware.
