The Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive border governance through stronger collaboration with the Federal Government, security agencies, traditional institutions and border communities to enhance security, peaceful coexistence and economic development.
Speaking at the 3rd Annual National Assembly/Border and Boundary Community Stakeholders' Interface in Abuja, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State and Chairman of the Rivers State Boundary Commission, Ngozi Nma Odu, said effective border governance remains essential for safeguarding national security and unlocking sustainable economic growth.
The three-day forum, themed "Inclusive Border Governance: Empowering Communities for Security and Economic Growth," brought together government officials, security agencies and community stakeholders to explore practical measures for improving border management and strengthening communities along Nigeria's borders.
Representing the Rivers State Government, Odu commended the Senate Committee on States and Local Government Administration for organising the interface, describing it as a timely initiative that encourages border communities to play active roles in surveillance, intelligence gathering and information sharing to improve border security and facilitate legitimate cross-border trade.
She said Rivers State recognises the strategic importance of effective border management and remains committed to protecting its boundaries while fostering peaceful relations with neighbouring communities.
The deputy governor stressed that achieving inclusive border governance requires sustained collaboration among federal and state institutions, security agencies, traditional rulers, youths and host communities. She reaffirmed that the administration of Siminalayi Fubara is ready to work with the Senate Committee and other stakeholders to advance initiatives that strengthen security, resilience and economic opportunities in border communities.
Odu expressed confidence that resolutions reached at the interface would reinforce national efforts to build peaceful, secure and economically vibrant border communities across the country.
