The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, says the administration of President Bola Tinubu will review the current N70,000 national minimum wage to align with prevailing economic realities.
Gbajabiamila made the statement on Thursday at the Good Governance Summit 2026 organised by Working People United (WoPU) in Abuja, noting that government is aware of the rising cost of living affecting Nigerian workers.
He said the administration remains committed to ensuring that wages reflect current economic conditions, stressing that the minimum wage policy was designed to be periodically reviewed in line with inflation and economic changes.
He recalled that the wage review cycle was reduced from five years to three years to allow for more responsive adjustments to workers’ earnings.
According to him, “the N70,000 wage, which was a milestone in 2024, must be honestly reassessed against today’s realities,” adding that the government would approach future reviews as a partner to labour rather than an adversary.
Gbajabiamila also urged organised labour to continue constructive engagement with the government to achieve sustainable outcomes for workers and the economy.
In a related remark, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, said effective governance should be measured by its impact on citizens’ welfare, particularly workers.
He noted that government policies must translate into improved living standards, decent employment, social protection, and expanded economic opportunities for Nigerians.
