A prominent Nigerian community leader in South Africa has called on the Federal Government to urgently engage South African authorities ahead of a June 30 deadline declared by anti-immigration groups in the country.

The appeal was made by Ekos Akpokabayen, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), who expressed concern that the development could trigger heightened tensions and pose security risks to foreign nationals living in South Africa.

Akpokabayen clarified that the June 30 deadline was not issued by the South African government but by groups campaigning against foreign immigration and demanding the departure of undocumented migrants.

According to him, the situation requires proactive diplomatic engagement to prevent possible unrest and ensure the protection of Nigerians and other foreign residents.

He urged the Nigerian government to open discussions with the South African government and relevant agencies to address concerns arising from the ultimatum before the situation escalates.

โ€œI urge the Nigerian government to take proactive measures by engaging the South African government and relevant authorities,โ€ Akpokabayen said.

The NUSA leader warned that tensions surrounding the deadline could degenerate into violence targeting both documented and undocumented migrants if not properly managed.

He noted that criminal elements could take advantage of any unrest to attack, harass or loot businesses owned by foreign nationals.

Akpokabayen also called on the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to maintain close surveillance of developments and sustain regular engagement with Nigerian community leaders across the country.

He said consistent consultations would help keep Nigerians informed about emerging developments and available measures aimed at protecting their welfare and security.

While advising Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, he stressed the need for caution during the period leading up to the deadline.

Akpokabayen expressed optimism that timely intervention and cooperation between the Nigerian and South African governments would help contain any potential tensions and safeguard residents from harm.
