Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has described the upcoming national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the party’s only viable pathway to contesting the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen, Saraki said the convention, scheduled to commence on Sunday, is critical to repositioning the party and ensuring that aspirants can run under its platform.
He stressed that he is fully backing the process to enable members—particularly young aspirants who have invested time and resources—to realise their political ambitions within the PDP.
“I see tomorrow’s convention as the only opportunity open to the PDP to be on the ballot paper. For some of us who have no intention of defecting, this is our last chance,” he said.
Saraki urged party stakeholders to prioritise collective goals over individual interests, noting that internal unity is essential to the party’s survival and electoral relevance.
He maintained that he does not belong to any faction but aligns with those committed to ensuring the PDP remains a viable platform for contesting elections in 2027. According to him, failure to achieve this would disenfranchise many loyal members.
Reflecting on past events, Saraki cited the earlier convention in Ibadan, which he said was marred by uncertainty over the participation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He explained that despite initial assurances, INEC’s absence undermined the process, forcing delegates—including those he sponsored from Kwara State—to withdraw.
Looking ahead, the former Senate President expressed optimism about the PDP’s prospects, suggesting that internal tensions within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could create openings ahead of the elections.
He also dismissed allegations linking him to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in any scheme to weaken the PDP or favour the APC, reiterating his commitment to the party.
Saraki further denied speculations about a possible defection, affirming his continued loyalty and dedication to strengthening the PDP ahead of the 2027 polls.
